Staying healthy – and happy – can be quite a challenge, especially as one gets older. There are many factors to consider, from physical and mental health to potential medications, check-ups, social events, and more. Thankfully, certain habits will all but guarantee a healthier life for senior citizens.

Eat Healthily

Eating healthy makes the top of this list, as it is both the most obvious and has the most significant impact on one’s health. As we age, our digestive systems slow down. This means that we can no longer eat like we used to and instead focus on healthier choices in life.

High-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are essential to a healthy digestive system and should not be overlooked. Additionally, ensuring that one’s diet is well-balanced and nutritious is critical. Finally, don’t forget to stay hydrated!

Exercise

Naturally, it is also essential to get one’s body up and moving around. Exercise is a great way to keep a body healthy and comes with many benefits – including a boost in mental health. Even a simple twenty-minute exercise routine a few times a week will have a positive impact.

Consider a low-impact exercise such as Tai Chi, water aerobics, or yoga. These exercises are especially helpful for those who deal with chronic pain and joint issues. Each activity is less likely to cause pain or damage yet comes with all of the benefits of standard exercise routines.

Manage Stress

Stress can be difficult to manage, especially during these trying times. However, finding an outlet or coping mechanism is key to maintaining a healthy mindset. Chronic stress releases cortisol, a natural hormone. Too much cortisol can be detrimental to your health, so managing stress is essential.

Physicals and Appointments

Nobody likes going to the doctor – or the dentist. Yet maintaining a medical schedule is one of the best ways to stay up to date in one’s health. That means attending yearly physicals, having routine dental cleanings twice a year, and making appointments whenever something feels off.

A Good Night’s Sleep

It’s painfully easy to forget how important a good night’s sleep is. Everyone, regardless of age, should strive to get the level of sleep that is healthy for them. The average person needs between seven and eight hours of sleep, and thus that is what one should aim for. Studies have shown the damaging effects of lack of sleep, and therefore should be avoided at all costs.
